Today, I slept unexpectedly late, coming to life around 11am. This cut our Lisbon adventures of the day considerably, as many of the museums and tourist sights close around 5pm. But it was a lovely (and windy) day, so we quickly put ourselves together and did as much as we could before 5pm.
Our major adventures will be detailed in the next few posts, so in short, our day involved crepes, a flea market, a quick look at a church, a visit to the triumphal arch, shopping, and seafood.
Miscellaneous things:
- In a candy store, we found an elaborate antique music box. It wasn’t for sale, it was just part of the store. I very badly wanted to touch it and hear it. Thankfully, the clerk saw my anguish, and she let me listen to a few songs.
- We saw a small squad of soldiers on horseback play Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train” on xylophones.
- We saw the police arrest a guy dressed like a bottle of Jagermeister.
We also walked past the elaborate facade of the Church Nossa Senhora da Conceição Velha, which was built upon a synagogue in the early 1500s. It is known for the elaborate Manueline entrance, which was reconstructed after the church was demolished in the 1755 earthquake.

The interior of the church is surprisingly pastel: pink, white, and yellow. It’s an active church and you don’t get to go anywhere other than the main room, but it’s free to have a look.
Unfortunately for me, I didn’t see the “no photography” sign right away, so I wound up being one of THOSE tourists. Luckily for you, though, that means I got a shot on the inside.
I also used one of those fancy electric votive things to light an LED for the price of one Euro. I figured I owed them for taking a photo.
